London
From the Roman name Londinium, this settlement became the Roman
capital of Britannia and has never looked back! The "hub"
of London now is the City of Westminster which includes the West
End. This area has the best shopping, loads of entertainment and
cultural activities. Most of London's major corporate offices are
either here or in the historic "City of London" which
is the financial district located further to the east. The whole
place has a cosmopolitan feel that makes it a global city - somewhere
anyone can feel at home.
London is home to four World Heritage Sites - the Palace of Westminster,
Tower of London, Maritime Greenwich and the Royal Botanic Gardens
in Kew. There's nowhere else where you can see so much for so
little:
All
Hallows by the Tower, Byward Street, EC3. Site of a church a few
hundred metres from the start of the Great Fire of London. Nearest
tube is Monument.
The
British Museum, one of the world's best within an easy stroll
from Holborn or Tottenham Court Road tube stations.
The
Imperial War Museum, learn about the frontline soldier during two
world wars, right up to modern day military. The haunting Holocaust
Exhibition (not suitable for under 12s) is painful viewing. Located
on Lambeth Road, South London - nearest tubes Lambeth North or Elephant
& Castle. The
Museum of London is in the heart of the City, located between Barbican
and St Pauls tube stations. This is the complete history of the
city from before the Romans to modern day world city. Royal
Observatory and National Maritime Museum, home of the prime meridian
of the world. Nearest Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station is Cutty
Sark. Changing
the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Time ? 11.30am daily (fewer in August).

Other famous attractions (that you have to pay for) include the
British Airways London Eye, Madame Tussaud's, Tower of London, National
Gallery, Tate Modern, Cruise the River Thames, London Aquarium,
London Dungeon, London Zoo, Royal Opera House and Shakespeare's
Globe Exhibition.
London has the most Michelin starred restaurants, second only
to Paris, and with over 6,000 restaurants representing the tastes
of 60+ countries there's bound to be a suitable restaurant near
you. Gordon Ramsay's maze on Grosvenor Square, Wizzy - on the
Fulham Road is a superb Korean restaurant and the Oxo Tower Brasserie
- Barge House Street is a fusion of food and a fantastic view.
There's so much to do and see, not only the usual sightseeing
places of museums and art galleries, but also trips to the theatre
and cinema, ballet or opera, comedy club or live music gig. Or
maybe just a pint of beer in a quiet pub tucked around the corner.
