Costa Almeria
Sited in the south east corner of Spain the coast is completely
unspoilt. The inland terrain has an almost lunar landscape with
is desert, arid feel. You can pay a visit to Yucca City aka Mini
Hollywood on the outskirts of Tabernas. This has several film sets
on view including one from "A Fist Full of Dollars".
The resorts & hotels of Almeria have been built sympathetically
with consideration for the local heritage, maintaining its slow
and unhurried pace and has 3 golf courses in the area. To the
west of Almeria are the highly developed tourist areas of Roquetas
de Mar and Aqua Dulce. Roquetas de Mar covers a stretch of coast
including El Parador and Las Salinas and is about 40 minutes by
car from Almeria airport. It's set against the beautiful mountains
and has long sandy beaches. This makes it a popular resort, but
the beaches seem to remain relatively un-crowded.
Almerimar is another popular resort. It's set around one of the
largest marinas in the Mediterranean and is the best place to
sit and watch the world go by. The pretty medieval Arab architecture
of the hilltop village of Mojacar is located further up the coast.
Certainly worth a visit is the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural
Park. The mountain range has a distinct volcanic appearance and
the terrain falls sharply into the sea. The cliffs are broken
by small ravines which may lead to hidden coves with sandy beaches.
The transparent waters make it a perfect place for underwater
photography.
